Esslingen am Neckar’s Graphic Collection, started in 1957 by Mayor Dieter Rose, is housed in the municipal galleries and constantly expanded. It now extend to almost 3,500 works.The collection is confined to 20th and 21st century works. The key themes are German Expressionism, art from the French "École de Paris", contemporary European art and work by artists whose biography is linked with the town. The high-quality complexes of work by Volker Böhringer, Adolf Fleischmann and Rolf Nesch are particularly outstanding items in the collection.

Purchases have been made from the exhibition programme consistently since 1992.
The Graphic Collection has been continually expanded by the addition of outstanding examples of contemporary photography since the launch of the "International Foto-Triennale" in Esslingen in 1989.
